And as such, the Malaysian Grand Prix has earned a reputation as one of the most exciting Formula One racing events of the year.   • With the temperatures rising as summer gets into full swing, Kuala Lumpur tries to keep cool with this month-long Water Festival. A varied programme of vaguely water-related events take place over the month including sandcastle building tournaments, underwater treasure hunts, kayaking and sailing events, jet-ski races and much more. There is also a programme of musical performances and dance events taking place in various indoor and outdoor venues

1/05/08  - 31/05/2008 LABUAN INTERNATIONAL SEA CHALLENGE

  • Labuan, Malaysia
  • The annual Labuan International Sea Challenge is a popular event which offers competitors fun and frolics on the high seas off Sabah. Events include the Rolex IGFA International Game Fishing Tournament which is part of the qualifying circuit of the Rolex/IGFA Offshore Championship; the Cross Channel Swimming Challenge which sees competitors from all over the world set off on the return journey to Pulau Papan; the Round Island Kayak Challenge during which participants take on a tough 50km (31 miles) course that hugs the coastline; and the Labuan International Extreme Kayak Challenge which tests competitors skill, strength and stamina over a 84km (52 miles) course across the Brunei Bay. This popular event attracts competitors and spectators from all over the world

The event features teams from all over the world promising a truly international atmosphere. Large crowds mass on the banks to watch as the impressive 10m (30ft) dragon boats carve their way through the water

The event features teams from all over the world promising a truly international atmosphere. Large crowds mass on the banks to watch as the impressive 10m (30ft) dragon boats carve their way through the ater. Manned by a team of about 20 rowers sitting two abreast down the length of the boat, participants are spurred on by the rhythmic beat thumped out by a drummer seated at the font of the boat. The first record of a dragon boat race at Penang was in 1934 but it wasn't until 1979 that the first annual Penang International Dragon Boat Festival was held.

  • Held in the spectacular Penang Botanic Gardens which are widely regarded as amongst some of the most beautiful gardens anywhere in the world, this annual show welcomes visitors to explore the many fabulous floral displays and exhibitions. Over the week, visitors are able to learn more about the growing techniques used by the gardeners at a series of special exhibitions and workshops

  • The annual Tadau Kaamatan or Harvest Festival is one of the most important celebrations in the year for the Kadazandusun ethnic communities of Sabah.  Held towards the end of May each year, the event celebrates the end of the tough work and looks forward to enjoying the bounty of the harvest. The day is characterised by cultural performances, music, traditional dances and food and drink in great quantities. Another popular aspect of the festival is the crowning of the "Unduk Ngadau" or Harvest Queen which is carried out amongst much pampering and ceremony

15/05/2008 – 15/06/2008  GAWAI DAYAK (DAYAK FESTIVAL)

  • Although ostensibly a festival for Sarawak's indigenous peoples including the Iban, Bidayuh, Kayan, Kenyah, Kelabit and Murut, many city dwellers join in the fun and celebrations of the annual Gawai Dayak or "Dayak Festival". It celebrates the end of the rice harvest and is traditionally a time for the community to come together after the hard work is over. It is also common for new marriages and unions to be forged. Visitors to the event can expect live music, traditional dancing, food and drink and other cultural displays and events

  • Also known as Wesak day in some parts of the world, Vesak Day is one of the biggest days of the year in the Buddhist calendar and is celebrated all over the world. The day marks the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha and is a day of great celebrations. It is traditional to clean the home and decorate it in preparation for the celebrations which begin before dawn and continue throughout the day with religious services, prayer meetings, meditation sessions and processions. The day is a public holiday throughout Malaysia and the celebrations in Penang are particularly spectacular

  • Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
  • Attracting daredevil extreme sports enthusiasts, the Kuala Lumpur International Tower Jump sees base jumpers leap off Kuala Lumpur's 421m (1,382ft) Menara Kuala Lumpur or "KL Tower" before releasing their parachutes after a three-second freefall - the amount necessary to clear the tower head. Not a sport for the fainthearted, the event attracts large crowds who come to watch the spectacle and soak up the atmosphere.

  • Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
  • The Merdeka Millennium Endurance (MME) is a 12-hour endurance race for cars between 1600-1900cc. It's grown year on year since it was first held in 2000 to become one of the biggest events of its kind in Malaysia. It's also seen as a good training ground for the racing stars of the future and now attracts competitors from outside Malaysia too.

  • A race to the top of one of the world's tallest towers, the Menara Kuala Lumpur (KL Tower), is not for the faint-hearted. Every year some of the world's best runners race up the 2,058 steps in a test of stamina and perseverance. There are several different categories within the race, so amateur runners also have a chance to test their stamina

1/09/2008 – 30/09/2008 BORNEO INTERNATIONAL YACHTING CHALLENGE

  • Labuan, Malaysia
  • Held each September, the Borneo International Yachting Challenge is a Category 3 sailing event, catering to five categories of boats - racing, cruising, sports, classic and ocean multi-hull. The highlight of the 5-day sailing festival is the 100-nautical mile Labuan to Miri Passage race in which crews race against each other in a bid to complete the run in the quickest time (the fastest boats usually make the journey in around 20 hours). In addition to the racing, there are plenty of activities and events in the areas around the harbours.

  • Marking the end of fasting during the Muslim festival of Ramadan, towns and cities throughout Malaysia hold a Ramadan Bazaar. Each bazaar has its own distinctive flavour that comes to life after dusk with a series of stalls and vendors pedalling their wares. They are a great place for visitors to sample traditional Malay cuisine which is freshly prepared and cooked on open coals while you wait.
